The main indicator of chain malfunction is excessive engine noise, which can be accompanied, in severe cases, by the activation of the engine warning light on the dashboard due to the lack of synchronization between the components.

The chain breaks when subjected to excessive or irregular loads. The rupture can be caused by lack of tension, due to a deficiency of hydraulic pressure inside the tensioner, or by metal consumption due to abrasion caused by non-compliant (impure) oil on the material.
